Following the success of the previous edition of the environmental life-cycle assessment and ecodesign for space activities course, ESA seeks 10 motivated professionals to attend the 2021 edition of the course. The training will be held online over 3.5 days between Tuesday, 5 October, 2021 and Friday 8 October.
This course is an outstanding opportunity for space professionals to complement their expertise with insight into a vital aspect of future space missions and for LCA practitioners gain enhanced understanding of space specificities.
ESA wants to equip the European space community with the knowledge and skills required to tackle environmental issues. Therefore, this training will help you to gain awareness about the environmental challenges that our societies, in general, and the space sector, in particular, must face, and how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Ecodesign can help measure and mitigate the environmental impact of space systems.
The course provides the latest information on ESA’s past, on-going and future activities in the field of environmental life-cycle assessment and ecodesign for space activities. Furthermore, the participants will get an introduction to the Space System Life Cycle Assessment Guidelines and the LCA database developed at ESA.
Schedule
Day 1 | Climate Collage | Understand the casual relationships between human activities and environmental phenomena linked to the climate |
Day 2 | Key environmental challenges and approaches to address them | Have an overview of the environmental challenges faced by our societies and understand how they responded and which approaches are put in place to address those challenges |
Day 3 | Life Cycle Assessment of space systems | Understand the key principles of Life Cycle Thinking, why LCA is useful and how it can be applied in the space sector |
Day 4 | Ecodesign of space systems | Understand what ecodesign is, why it is useful to businesses and how it can be deployed in the space sector |

Could you please share information about the lecturers in this course? Also, I would like to know about the selection criteria for participants. In other words, based on which factors these 10 professionals are chosen? Thank you very much in advance.
Dear Olga,
the lecturers are from Deloitte Sustainability and from the ESA CleanSpace team.
There is no selection criteria for participants. It is based on first come, first served. Have a lovely day, Jessica
