Today ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will have a first attempt of catching scientific images of elusive weather formations from the International Space Station with his camera. Researchers on ground have been scouring global weather reports looking for suitable events for Andreas to film. Predicting the weather and combining this with the Space Station’s orbit while considering the spacecraft’s angle in comparison to the Sun is no mean feat. Every day the researchers from Denmark calculate the best possibilities and send mission control a list of times. It is up to the tireless efforts of the people at the Columbus Control Centre to try to squeeze the photo-sessions into his packed timeline.

Today Andreas will spend some time trying to photograph the storms from the Pirs window on the Russian segment or ESA’s Cupola observatory. The photo above shows an overview of possible events today.
