ESA Explores podcast: the space doctor is in

In a new episode of ESA’s ESA Explores podcast, host Ally Koehler chats with ESA Senior Flight Surgeon Sergi Vaquer Araujo about how he became a space doctor as well as the medical aspects of ESA’s 2021 astronaut selection.

Having been amazed by space and spaceflight his whole life, Sergi found a way to combine this fascination with a love of biology and medicine. Throughout his medical studies, he kept his eyes on the skies and was part of a team selected to participate in a programme known as ‘Fly Your Thesis!‘ in which students propose, design, build, test and fly their experiments on board a parabolic flight.

He also spent six months as a trainee at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, where he now works in the space medicine team overseeing the health of astronauts before, during and after their missions to space.
