NASA and ESA will brief media at 17:30 CET on Wednesday, 16 January, on the details for ESA to provide the Service Module for the first Orion spacecraft mission in 2017.

Briefing participants include: William H. Gerstenmaier, NASA Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations, Thomas Reiter, ESA Director of Human Spaceflight and Operations, Mark Geyer, NASA Orion Program Manager, and Bernardo Patti, ESA Manager of International Space Station Operations.

NASA, ESA hold 16 January NASA TV briefing on new Orion agreement

NASA and ESA will brief media at 17:30 CET on Wednesday, 16 January, on the details for ESA to provide a service module for the first Orion spacecraft mission in 2017. European media are invited to watch the event and can ask questions.

Orion will be the most advanced spacecraft ever designed and carry astronauts farther into space than ever before. ESA’s service module will be based on the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). Sitting directly below Orion’s crew capsule, it will provide propulsion, power, thermal control, as well as supplying water and atmosphere for the astronauts in the habitable module.

ESA astronaut André Kuipers will talk about his upcoming mission to the International Space Station during two media events: 5 September in Cologne, Germany, and 8 September in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

The events will highlight the scientific and educational aspects of the mission, the operations teams and the mission name and logo. André will be launched aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in late 2011, subject to confirmation of the return to flight of the Soyuz launchers. Full details via ESA web.

(REPOST - first published 2.02.2011) A quick promotion for the upcoming ATV media briefing to be held in Germany at ESA's European Astronaut Centre in Cologne on 9 February.

The event will be an excellent backgrounder on the vessel and will include ATV programme expert Hans Peter Leiseifer, ESA's lead Mission Director Kris Capelle from ATV-CC and two ESA astronauts: Frank De Winne and Alexander Gerst.

While it's in Germany, the briefing will be held in English, and questions can be answered in EN, DE, F, NL (and probably one or two other languages).
