Today’s artwork comes from Norway, where filters and solar array drives are also produced for the European Service Modules. Working as a duo, Selma Moseng and Linn Hansen from the Kristiania University College, in Olso, Norway developed this piece for the Art for Artemis.
All the works we are highlighting in the Art for Artemis project will be on display at an exhibtion, and two pieces will be selected to accompany the third European Service Module on its voyage to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.
Linn and Selma explain their artwork in their own words:
We wanted to illustrate the journey of the Artemis project through a set of events that runs throughout the artwork. The concept we chose to base it on was the strong goddess Artemis, being the force that paves the way to new opportunities.
And Linn answered our questions:
What school are you studying at and what degree?
I am taking a vocational degree in Illustration at Fagskolen Kristiania.
Tell us about the technique used to make your Art for Artemis piece.
The project was a collaboration with one of my classmates, we used Adobe Illustrator for the entire piece. The piece is meant to have a more of a collage-type of appeal with many pieces assembled into one, and Illustrator works great for that sort of technique. Since we were two people we used a sketch for reference and drew parts separately, then put them together afterwards.
What inspired you to make the artwork and who are your inspirations in general?
We are both very into mythology and therefore the Artemis Goddess was what caught us. We tried to make a image that tells a story, and engage the viewer. I am also really interested in the Universe, my own art usually is very influenced by it, so it was a really fun project to do. I think for this piece I was inspired by Moebius (the comic artist) with his thin linework and bold use of colors.
Do you have any thoughts to share about the Moon and human spaceflight?
I am very excited of what they might find next exploration wise, space is huge and there is plenty of things we still don’t know yet, hopefully this will bring us closer to be able to visit other planets in the future. Taking up the trip back to the Moon is a very crucial step forward to make that happen.
Anything else you would like to add…
It was fun to be able to participate this contest and I am excited to see what happens next in the Artemis project.
