The tenth creative work for the Art for Artemis project to be featured is from Sophie Prast who is studying at Media College Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Two artworks will be selected to accompany the third European Service Module on its trip from the Airbus integration hall in Bremen, Germany, and all artworks will be on display at an exhibition in Bremen.

What school are you studying at and what degree?

I am a student at the Media College Amsterdam in The Netherlands following a spatial design course. A spatial designer develops ideas for photoshoots, exhibitions, shop windows, film sets or for virtual reality. Our job is to take a client’s wishes and work them into a design. I develop the design in two, three or in four dimensions.

Tell us about the technique used to make your Art for Artemis piece:

I used Illustrator to develop my idea. Illustrator allows artist’s to draw and design logos, icons, packaging and web illustrations.

I was introduced to this software at school and liked it immediately, so I started to use Illustrator more and more to develop my ideas. I am getting more and more at ease with the software too.

What inspired you to make the artwork and who are your inspirations in general?

My design tries to connect Earth and the Moon and show that technology can bring everything within reach. I was inspired by a post on social media that detailed how we could be living on the Moon in a few years. If this happens soon it would be so cool and it inspired me to show that this future is within reach with the knowledge, science, and technology we have today.

I get inspiration from many different sources. If I am developing something for a client, I look at their wishes. What is the goal of the design and who do we want to reach? If I am developing something for friends or family, I like to keep it personal and use my hobbies and interests for inspiration. When I create for myself, I am often inspired by other people’s work that I see on social media.

Do you have any thoughts to share about the Moon and human spaceflight?

I am amazed by what is already possible, and all that we have learnt and discovered about the Moon and the Universe already. I am very curious to see how much more knowledge we will have in just a few years.

Aan welke onderwijsinstelling studeer je en welke opleiding volg je?

Ik zit op het Media College Amsterdam in Nederland. Ik volg hier de opleiding ruimtelijke vormgever. Als ruimtelijk vormgever ontwikkel je ideeën voor bijvoorbeeld een fotoshoot, tentoonstelling, winkeletalage, filmset of voor een digitale ruimtelijke beleving. Aan mij de taak de wensen van een opdrachtgever uit te werken in een ontwerp. Dit werk ik vervolgens 2D, 3D of in 4D uit.

Welke techniek heb je gebruikt voor je Art for Artemis kunstwerk?

Voor het uitwerken van mijn idee heb ik gebruik gemaakt van het programma: illustrator. Met illustrator kun je onder andere tekenen, logo’s ontwerpen, pictogrammen maken, verpakkingen ontwerpen en web illustraties maken. 

Ik ben via school in aanraking gekomen met dit programma en vond het gelijk al zo een leuk en fijn programma om mee te werken dat ik steeds vaker met illustrator mijn ideeën ging uitwerken. Langzamerhand word ik ook steeds een stukje handiger met dit programma.

Wat heeft je geïnspireerd om het kunstwerk te maken en wie zijn je inspiratiebronnen?

In mijn ontwerp wil ik de verbinding tussen de aarde en de maan laten zien die met de technologie van tegenwoordig steeds meer binnen hand bereik ligt. Ik werd op dit idee gebracht door een post op social media waarin stond dat we over een aantal jaren misschien wel op de maan zouden kunnen gaan leven. Het leek mij zo tof als dit in de toekomst echt zou kunnen dat ik geïnspireerd raakte om in mijn ontwerp te laten zien dat dit helemaal niet zo onrealistisch is. Al helemaal niet met de kennis, de wetenschap en de technologie van tegenwoordig.

Waar ik mijn inspiratie uithaal verschilt heel erg. Als ik iets maak voor een opdrachtgever kijk ik naar de wensen van die persoon. Wat is het doel van mijn werk en wie wil ik hier mee aanspreken? Maak ik iets voor vrienden of familie vind ik het leuk om het persoonlijk te maken en maak ik gebruik van hun hobby’s en interesses. Wanneer ik voor mezelf bezig ben, krijg ik vaak inspiratie uit andermans werk dat ik tegenkom op bijvoorbeeld social media. 

Heb je ideeën over de maan en menselijke ruimtevaart die je wilt delen?

Ik vind het bijzonder en indrukwekkend hoeveel er tegenwoordig al mogelijk is en wat we allemaal al te weten zijn gekomen over het universum en de maan. Ik ben erg benieuwd hoe deze kennis eruitziet over een aantal jaar.
