It’s time for our ninth creative work of the Art for Artemis project. Martin Braun writes about his work:
My name is Martin Braun and I’m a student at Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany. I study communications design in my sixth semester, and I will end my education with a diploma in design.
What particularly appealed to me about the ESA competition was the statement that Europe and Germany, too, play an important role in the cooperation with NASA. It’s been almost 50 years since
the last person set foot on the moon. To be able to make a small contribution to this mission and to bring it closer to the people was a huge motivation to take part in this project.
Behind the elaborated draft lies the vision that drives the mission: “to the Moon, Mars and beyond”. The design should show that this mission does not end with the Moon, but is just the beginning and that we will soon be looking from the Moon to Earth again.
The artwork I submitted started by focusing on the Orion-European Service Module to show where we are going to be and what we will have achieved in the future, but the mission doesn’t stop there. ESA is pushing forward to not just bring humans back to the Moon. It’s a project that is looking for new challenges like travelling to Mars. The artwork is trying to express this future vision and what humans will achieve.
My artwork is a combination of illustrations and photos. The Orion-European Service Module is an illustration while the surface of the Moon is taken from a photograph. Every detail is arranged to correlate with the objects in my artwork. Therefore, everything is measured to be placed following the golden ratio. The artwork is more conceptional than just a random interaction between objects. Even the typography follows the rules of the golden ratio.
I wanted to show the next goal on this journey and follow up with the inspiration that goes along with it. The Moon is a goal which will soon be achieved, and then Mars is going to be the next one.
I’m not someone who is inspired by only one artist or one artwork. It’s more like a flow, following from new inspirations which coming from so many directions. I am always looking for the new trend or something that has never been done before.
I am happy to be a small wheel in this gigantic project and feel honoured to take part in this journey.
