The fifth featured artwork for the Art for Artemis project is from Edoardo Follegatti from Italy, studying at the Scuola Internazionale di Comics. The original answers in Italian are posted below this translated interview:

Hello,

my name is Edoardo Follegatti and I am one of the three students from the Scuola Internazionale di Comics di Torino chosen for the contest.

What school are you studying at and what degree?

I graduated in engineering and then I got a diploma in Comics at the International School of Comics in Turin. I am currently working as an engineer at the City of Turin and as a cartoonist.

Tell us about the technique used to make your Art for Artemis piece

I tried to obtain a level of synthesis that would be, if made into a giant picture, not overbearing but at the same time, have the most evocative messaging possible. I chose a stroke with a small amount of cross-hatching combined with a simple palette but with strong contrasts.

What inspired you to make the artwork and who are your inspirations in general?

The idea probably came from the intro scene of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen where an astronaut finds Dr. Manhattan on the Moon. I tried to include all the most evocative elements of space travel without crossing into science fiction: a clear shot of the astronaut and point of view reflected in the mirror of his helmet.

Then of course the lunar surface and the immensity of space.

Do you have any thoughts to share about the Moon and human spaceflight?

I think space exploration is a very fascinating subject, but it will probably not lead to anything for a very long time. The knowledge and resources of humans are limited.

All we can do is continue to dream and strive for something unattainable.

Because, contrary to our nature, our imagination is unlimited.

Anything else you would like to add…

I would have liked to add a second astronaut wearing a 1970s suit in the reflection of our astronaut. As if there was a handover. I thought of it too late. Maybe it’s better this way.

Mi sono laureato in ingegneria e successivamente ho conseguito il diploma di Fumetto alla Scuola Internazionale di Comics di Torino. Al momento lavoro come ingegnere al Comune di Torino e come fumettista.

Ho provato a ottenere un livello di sintesi che potesse risultare, nel caso di una gigantografia, il meno invadente e, allo stesso tempo, il più evocativo possibile. Ho scelto un tratto definito con una piccola dose di tratteggio unito a una palette semplice ma che possedesse dei forti contrasti.

What inspired you to make the artwork and who are your inspirations in general?

Probabilmente l’idea è nata dalla scena intro del film Watchmen di Zack Snyder in cui un astronauta trova il Dr. Manatthan sulla luna. Ho cercato di inserire tutti gli elementi più suggestivi del viaggio spaziale senza sfociare nel fantascientifico. Un’inquadratura netta dell’astronauta e il suo POV riflesso nello specchio del casco.

Poi ovviamente la superficie lunare e l’immensità dello spazio.

Do you have any thoughts to share about the Moon and human spaceflight?

Credo che l’esplorazione dello spazio sia un argomento molto affascinante ma che, probabilmente, non porterà a nulla ancora per tantissimo tempo. Le conoscenze e le risorse dell’essere umano, che già di per sé nasce limitato, sono limitate.

Non possiamo far altro che continuare a sognare e impegnarci nel raggiungere qualcosa di irraggiungibile.

Perchè, contrariamente alla nostra natura, la nostra immaginazione è illimitata.

Anything else you would like to add…

Avrei voluto aggiungere un secondo astronauta con una tuta degli anni ‘70 nel riflesso del nostro astronauta. Come se vi fosse un passaggio di consegne. Ci ho pensato troppo tardi. Magari meglio così.
