Art for Artemis: Sara

Our second feature of the Art for Artemis project is from the International School of Comics in Turin, Italy. The original text in Italian follows the English translation:

Hi! I’m Sara, a 22-year-old aspiring Italian illustrator. Last year I finished the three-year illustration course at the International School of Comics in Turin, Italy. Through the school I was offered the chance to participate in the very interesting Art for Artemis project.

After a few tests, I decided to make an acrylic board that represents, in the simplest way possible, the journey that will see two astronauts touch lunar soil again. And in honour of the first woman who, thanks to the Artemis programme, will land on the Moon, I decided to paint a pink flag in the hands of the central astronaut. On her helmet, you can also see the reflection of Mars, which we hope to reach in the next few years thanks to the results of the Artemis programme.

My work is influenced by the many videos and photographs that I found while exploring the subject. For example, the videos made by astronaut Serena Auñon-Chancellor and the photographs taken by her were a great inspiration. In particular I enjoyed the videos of Serena and NASA engineer Lindsay Aitchison in the #askNASA series of videos. Thanks to these short recordings, they were able to explain, in a sympathetic way, how we will visit the Moon and what the Artemis programme entails. Participating in this competition has allowed me to learn a lot more about space that I didn’t know before.

From an artistic point of view, I was inspired by the work of the Spanish illustrator Diego L. Rodríguez, especially the “40 HAIKU POSTERS” project.

I would like to conclude by saying that I was not yet born when the last Apollo mission took place, so I feel very fortunate to be able to attend such a unique and important event, and the return to the Moon, in the coming years. I am even happier that this dream will finally come true for a woman. This voyage will make history and I am very proud to have been able to take part, even if only in a very small way, in such a project.

Ciao! Sono Sara, un’aspirante illustratrice italiana di 22 anni. Ho terminato l’anno scorso il triennio di illustrazione presso la Scuola Internazionale di Comics (Torino), scuola che mi ha permesso di partecipare a questo interessantissimo progetto. Dopo alcune prove ho deciso di realizzare una tavola ad acrilico che potesse rappresentare, in maniera più semplice possibile, il viaggio che consentirà a due astronauti di toccare nuovamente il suolo lunare. E in onore della prima donna che, grazie a questo programma, atterrerà sulla Luna, ho deciso di dipingere una bandiera rosa in mano all’astronauta centrale. Sul suo casco, inoltre, si intravede il riflesso di Marte, che si spera di raggiungere nei prossimi anni grazie sempre ai risultati del programma ARTEMIS.

Il mio lavoro è stato sicuramente influenzato dai tanti video e dalle tante fotografie che ho cercato per approfondire l’argomento. Sono stati di grande ispirazione, ad esempio, i video realizzati dall’astronauta Serena M. Auñon-Chancellor e dall’ingegnere Lindsay Aitchison, per la rubrica AskNASA. Grazie a queste brevi registrazioni sono riuscite a spiegare, con grande simpatia, come sarà possibile visitare la Luna e in che cosa consiste il programma Artemis. Partecipare a questo concorso mi ha permesso quindi di apprendere tante nozioni riguardanti lo spazio che prima non conoscevo. 

Dal punto di vista artistico mi sono ispirata al lavoro dell’illustratore spagnolo Diego L. Rodríguez, in particolar modo al progetto “40 HAIKU POSTERS”.

Concluderei dicendo che non ero ancora nata quando l’ultima missione Apollo si concretizzò e perciò mi ritengo molto fortunata a poter assistere, nei prossimi anni, ad un evento così unico ed importante,  il ritorno sulla Luna. Sono ancora più contenta del fatto che finalmente questo sogno possa realizzarsi anche per una donna. Questo viaggio segnerà la storia e aver potuto partecipare, anche se in piccolissima parte, ad un progetto del genere mi rende molto orgogliosa.
