You, together with your 500 million fellow citizens from ESA’s 20 European member nations, are the collective owners of one of the world’s leading space agencies. The European Space Agency is an intergovernmental organisation, a cooperative coming together of its Member States in their national interest and common good. This new video offers a quick introduction: Europe, meet ESA.

Hi!
Watching this nice video reminds me on something I’m very unhappy with. If, as described above, I’m one of the owners of the agency why can’t I access the data produced by the satellites? As a software developer I would be able to process this data. It is not that I want to make a business out of it but I think that me and others could find new uses for this data. Even if I only play around with it nothing is lost. But instead, again, beside science only companies profit from something build with my taxes. Sure, one could say that indirectly I profit too because those companies create wealth in a bigger context. All right but I could say that we also loose chances and new innovations by restricting access to this data. Hopefully one day this data will be available to all.
