Exploring our Solar System is one of humankind's most exciting adventures. ESA selected its first astronauts in 1978 for the 1983 Spacelab mission on NASA's Space Shuttle. Here you'll find more about our current astronauts – the class of 2009.

(English) A backbone network for a robotic arm

(English) The robotic arm gently transfers the astronaut to the far end of the International Space Station to install a radiator on the Russian side. A mix of commands and data flows between the robot and the human in outer space, and between the crew inside the station and the teams on Earth.

(English) On Wednesday 16 June and Sunday 20 June ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet and NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough are going to get into their Extravehicular Mobility Units – or spacesuits – and return outside the International Space Station for the third time together. Their mission on both spacewalks: to install new solar arrays that will increase power to the outpost.
