Andreas Mogensen

Andreas Mogensen began his career as a drilling services engineer for Schlumberger Oilfield Services in 2000 and 2001, working on offshore rigs in Congo and Angola. He then worked as a control systems engineer at Vestas Wind Systems in Denmark from 2001 to 2003. While pursuing his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin from 2004 to 2007, he served as a research and teaching assistant. In 2007 and 2008, Andreas worked on ESA’s Swarm mission as an attitude and orbit control systems engineer. Before becoming an astronaut, he conducted research into spacecraft guidance and control for lunar missions at the Surrey Space Centre in the United Kingdom.

Selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009, Andreas completed basic training in November 2010 and became qualified for spacewalks using both American and Russian spacesuits. He participated in ESA’s CAVES and Pangaea training and two NASA NEEMO missions, simulating extreme environments. Andreas also contributed to ESA's Lunar Lander mission design and served as European astronaut liaison to NASA's Johnson Space Center from 2016 to 2022, taking on key roles such as Capcom, Ground-IV, and Expedition Lead.

In 2015, Andreas became the first Dane in space during the 10-day iriss mission aboard the International Space Station. He returned to space on the Huginn mission in 2023 as the first non-US pilot of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, conducting diverse experiments in science and physiology. Andreas served as ISS commander for over five months, making him the longest-serving European in this role. He returned to Earth in March 2024 after more than six months on the Space Station.
