A tradition at Concordia research station is for all members of the winter crew to fashion a sign pointing to their home town.

They are placed outside as a memento to the many people from all over the world who have stayed at Concordia through the long winter’s night.

Interestingly the signs do not decay as the surroundings are so cold no bacteria or fungus exist to rot away the wood.

ESA-sponsored medical doctor Beth Healey just tweeted her sign in the making. She will taking the long trip home over land in the supply-caravan-on-skis that takes 10 days to reach the Antarctic coast.
