It is not an easy to talk about Concordia, you need to find the right words and to wrestle with your feelings, it is as if She (Concordia) were your one big Love.

It is now almost a year since my return to civilization and I am still a whirlwind of emotions inside, a fire restarts with a only a mention of the word Concordia and it burns forcefully bringing back powerful emotions this experience has given me that I feel in my chest and my mind.
It is almost hard to believe that you can experience such deep emotions in such an aseptic place. The images I have of spending a winter at Concordia spans a lifetime. Anger, fatigue, frustration, boredom, lack of routine, loved ones, sharing space and time with people and personalities that are strangers: it is not easy.
But Concordia also stands for joy and amazement, for circular rainbows, for a cold that makes your suit seem as if it is made of cardboard and that gets into your bones. It stands for meeting new people with whom you will share three months of endless sunshine and for a fascinating meeting with those who just went through the whole winter before you. You will look into their eyes and you will see a depth and vastness in them and before you know it it will be as if you were outside looking at the endless view of the horizon. Without being too intrusive you will try to understand the reason for this, but you will not find it, instead when winter comes it will become yours.

I remember with great joy that one October day, sitting around the table looking at the expressions and faces of my 14 fellow adventurers and I remember feeling the desire and the strength to face the Concordia experience.
I left home with tears in my eyes after having to bid farewell to my family but full of curiosity and anxiously awaiting the arrival in the place only a few can ever reach.
The departure of the last plane marks the beginning of a unique period shared only by us who have spent the winter in Concordia. The long Antarctic night is fascinating and dark, winter makes you see the harmony of Concordia in a different light: you realise that Concordia is no longer a place but a physical entity. It is alive and puts you to the test until you are exhausted, but it also grants you incredible emotions. It bewitches you with full-moon nights and an immense illuminated plateau, it stuns you with moonless nights when the horizon is not visible but you know where it is because the stars in the sky disappear behind it. It makes you understand the importance and the power that light and Sun have, and it offers you a unique gift: the chance to get to know yourself intimately.

Many have asked me why I decided to invest a year of my life in the most isolated and cold place on Earth. There is no specific reason for the choice I made, but looking at the complete picture, I can say is that it was written in my life’s diary.

It is not easy to talk about Concordia, you have to know how to find the right words and fight with emotions and, just like the love of your life, you love her and you hate her and you will never forget her.
