Primerka: a full fitness check of our spaceship

Primerka 1 The day after arrival in Baikonur was a special day. We went to the launch basis. We took two separate buses of course, as the prime crew and backup crew are always separated. In a large building we saw our Sojuz capsule ready for lift-off. It is impressive to see the spaceship that will allow us to fly around the Earth. The capsule is visible in a large hall and is supported by scaffolding. The first time that we entered the spaceship as crew we were dressed in overalls. We could not enter through the side entrance as we do in the simulator in Star City. The real Sojuz does not have a door there. Passed!

Klaar voor de examens We have a 'Go for launch'. The final exams are behind us and the examination board considers me ready to fly. The process was not straightforward. Two days of hard work and sweating, literally. The Soyuz simulator doesn't have air conditioning, and neither does my warm space suit. I had to stay calm and think clearly. It went well. Apart from a few blemishes - nothing that would cause any problems in real-life – we all passed the exam with flying colours. Read on...

Trainen met het zevende bemanningslid: Robonaut

Robonaut We hebben er een zevende bemanningslid bij. Hij eet niets, slaapt nooit en overleeft zelfs zonder ruimtepak een ruimtewandeling. Robonaut is door NASA ontwikkeld om in de toekomst saai, langdurig of gevaarlijk werk van astronauten over te nemen. Deze week heb ik getraind met de robot. Hij kan zijn armen in allerlei bochten wringen en nu al complexe handelingen uitvoeren. We hebben een testje gedaan met een doos waar een soort deken overheen lag. Robonaut haalde de deken van de doos en pakte uit die doos vervolgens een envelop. Zo nauwkeurig zijn de sensoren op dit apparaat. De ontwerpers hebben hem een spacey look gegeven. Hij lijkt wel wat op een Cylon uit de tv-serie Battlestar Galactica. Wat hij in werkelijkheid allemaal kan, gaan we testen aan boord van het ruimtestation tijdens mijn missie. Lees verder...
